TransAM is an open-source Asset Performance Management (APM) platform. It helps transportation agencies address the challenges they face when it comes to APM.

Manage asset lifecycles, project planning and grants using one platform: TransAM. From data management to reporting to integration with your existing platforms, TransAM offers a sleek, customizable open-source solution for effective APM.

The first fully open-source software platform of its kind, TransAM provides a low-cost, license-free alternative to proprietary APM systems.

All-in-One Asset Performance Management and Project Planning

TransAM works as the central repository for all APM activities: tracking asset condition and replacement cycles, automatically generating Federal Transit Administration (FTA) required National Transit Database (NTD) reports, quantifying capital needs and developing and deploying state-of-good-repair policies for all types of transportation-related assets.

Who benefits from TransAM

Transit organizations can:

  • Manage asset life-cycle from purchase to disposition.
  • Add, update and maintain an accurate inventory of assets
  • Record and report asset life cycle data
  • Export asset data through raw data exports, pre-formatted reports and custom-based queries
  • Facilitate state and Federal reporting including FTA NTD reporting
  • Deploy a needs-driven asset replacement project planning process

States can:

  • Deploy a statewide asset inventory
  • Streamline the annual capital project planning and grant management processes
  • Better predict investment needs statewide, regionally and at the agency level
  • Provide enhanced reporting at all levels
  • Automate the review of sub-recipient adherence to periodic data updates

Planning partners can:

  • Maintain and access data from a region-specific capital inventory of assets
  • Facilitate the planning process with local agencies
  • Easily collect and maintain an annually updated, multi-year program of projects
  • Determine investment needs and allocate funds according to regional and local project priorities

Key Features

Asset Inventory

TransAM includes a comprehensive hierarchical asset inventory database. Assets are categorized based on FTA hierarchies for federal reporting, with a layer of customization for agency-specific needs. The system can manage any type of transportation asset, including rolling stock, linear, facilities, shelters, signage, maintenance equipment, non-physical assets and more.

As users, assigned agency staff can update and maintain an inventory of assets via bulk import, external system data integration and manual entry. Users can download asset data exports in pre-formatted reports or custom-based queries.

Asset Life Cycle

Each asset is tracked from purchase to final disposition or transfer. Asset updates are stored as events, including maintenance, expense, condition and other asset-specific operational activities that can be leveraged for reporting and workflow purposes. Events can include attachments such as photographs or other digital documents like titles, registrations, engineering specifications, maintenance records, damage reports and notices of sale.

User Types

TransAM is used by individual agencies and in group deployments where a planning partner oversees and coordinates with individual agencies.

Each user is assigned a specialized role to access only the modules and data necessary for their function. This helps ensure that data from individual agencies cannot be seen by others, while oversight agencies can be granted specified access for planning, oversight and coordination with local partners. All users have the ability to assign tasks to themselves and others in the system and track completion of those tasks.

Data Access, Mapping and Reporting

Agencies can access their data at all times. Asset, project and funding data is exportable in a variety of formats, including Excel, CSV and PDF.

Pre-configured reports are available to all TransAM users: detailed reports on asset inventories, State of Good Repair (SOGR), funding sources and projections. NTD reports are auto-generated, pre-formatted for seamless entry into FTA’s NTD database.

The platform's visual reporting capabilities can integrate with external mapping services compatible with the OGC Web Map Service. This allows users to generate asset maps at any level of geography.

Policies

Policies empower specified users to set system-wide rules regarding agency business practices, including: estimated service life of an asset; FTA Useful Life Benchmarks (ULB) and Transit Economic Requirements Model (TERM) scale performance metrics; inflationary rules; asset depreciation, disposition and replacement rules.

Project Planning and Forecasting

TransAM’s SOGR Analyzer generates replacement projects for assets that have met their estimated service life. Users can also manually input projects, include single or multi-year funding requests, upload documents and track project-specific milestones.

Users can compare forecasted asset replacements with asset decay curves to assess agency-configured replacement policies against industry standards. Using TransAM, users can analyze all projects requesting funding across a defined period of years, view annual funding needs and adjust annual allocations and project-based funding requests accordingly.

Funding and Grants

TransAM facilitates the creation and tracking of grants, funding programs, budgets and the management of their relationships to assets, projects and ownership of funding sources.

Grants, funding programs and specific budgets can be restricted to only certain departments or agencies. This enables the correct users and organizations to assign grant and program funds to the appropriate projects based on eligibility and budget availability. The system also reports the use of various funding sources across the whole asset inventory and at the asset level.

Integration

Connecting legacy software systems to TransAM reduces data silos and coordinates previously disjointed business processes. Exchanging relevant information between TransAM and accounting or maintenance management systems is especially useful.

Users can configure TransAM to integrate with third party systems through simple data export/import routines or via a RESTful application programming interface (API). TransAM publishes its own API that allows other systems to request relevant data from TransAM, in the same way that TransAM requests data from outside systems.

TransAM allows you to:

Reduce total cost of asset ownership

Preserve capital, reduce maintenance costs and extend the life of assets.

Improve operational efficiency

Consolidate existing data from internal applications; integrate with legacy and future third-party systems and easily access data as needed.

Support compliance

Comply with federal, state and local regulations and reporting requirements, including the FTA's Transit Asset Management (TAM) Final Rule and NTD reporting requirements. TransAM is continually updated to support federal compliance and can be tailored for state and local reporting guidelines.

Enhance coordination

Improve communication and coordination across internal departments and with external organizations. Track assets and funds owned by multiple agencies, record outsourced activities and manage workflows with approvals for multi-department and multi-agency project planning efforts.

Streamline investments and financials

Track funding sources and available budgets; prioritize capital and operating projects across short and long-term planning horizons and identify and track backlog as well as ongoing and future needs.

Leverage peer investment

Inherit new features and enhancements funded by other agencies that have implemented TransAM.
